So many F's where oh where to start.

In the world of interior design we use furnishings, fittings and finishings to describe various things, and while these may be very obvious to us, it might not always make sense to you.

Let's break the confusion today.

What is a Finishing?

Finishings refer to the decorative touches or surfaces that are added to a room to give it a final polished look. These elements can range from the color of the walls and flooring to the type of artwork or wall hangings that are displayed. Lighting fixtures and window treatments are also part of the finishing touches that can dramatically impact the overall look and feel of a room. Finishings help to tie a room together and create a cohesive design scheme.

Interior design fittings

What is Fitting?

Fittings refer to the permanent fixtures of a room, such as doors, windows, and cabinets. These items are often custom-built or designed to fit the specific space and are not easily moved or replaced. In an interior design context, fittings can also include features such as bespoke shelving, lighting fixtures, and built-in seating. Fittings are an important aspect of interior design because they help to define the layout and functionality of a space..

What is Furnishing?

Furnishings, on the other hand, refer to the movable items in a room such as sofas, chairs, and tables. These items are typically added to a space once the fittings have been installed. Furnishings can come in a variety of styles and materials, and are essential for creating a comfortable and functional living space. Some common examples of furnishings include carpeting, rugs, curtains, and decorative accessories like photo frames and vases.

Now this might seem clear cut until you get asked so what finishing would you like on your windows? Yes you can have finishings on your windows. You might want to have a smokey effect or a mirror effect on your windows to prevent people from seeing into your space.

Another complication could be your kitchen counters, yes kitchen counters are a fitting with a finish or can be a fitting that a finish is added to.

How can that be you ask?

Well, if you order a solid marble counter top that would be a fitting with a marble finish.

Alternatively, if you already had a countertop and you wanted to recover it, that would then become a finishing so adding things like vinyl, laminate, paint or overlay to your counter top that would be a finish and not a fitting.

All fittings and furnishings have finishes!

Yes all fittings have finishes, whether it is quarts, wool, wood, velvet, glass, mirror, cotton, bronze, gold, paint, or stone, every single fitting and furnishing has a finish to it.

The finish is what makes your fitting or furniture stand out and stand the test of time.

For instance, when it comes to sofas, leather is very durable but it doesn't give the soft cosy feeling of velvet.

In the same way, marble is gorgeous in a kitchen and gives a luxurious feel but that doesn't mean that having formica or wood wouldn't be equally as lovely, it all depends on your budget.

I hope I have managed to unravel some of the mystery behind the 3 F's.

In conclusion, furniture fittings and finishes can be confusing and overwhelming, but with the help of a knowledgeable interior designer, you can navigate through the world of home décor seamlessly.
